Early in the shippuden arc, it is stated that Hidan failed to capture a jinjuriki(sp?) By then the four, seven, and five tails have already been caught. Deidara was assigned to the three and one tail(s). And naruto hasn't encountered kakuzu until the hidan and kakuzu arc. And when Hidan fought the two tails, it was obvious it was their first encounter. This leaves killer bee and utakata as hidan's first jinjuriki battle. I chose Utakata because of Kakuzu's reaction when nii turned into a full cat. Kakuzu had reacted as if this was the first time Hidan had caused a jinjuriki to turn to it's full form like this, and hidan was surprised she could control the two tails fully. Killerbee, known for being able to control his tailed beast easily, would have done the same; thus, their reactions should have differed. Utakata on the other hand, sweared never to turn into his tailed beast form. Also, since hidan used the term jinjuriki, it could not have been the three tails since the three tails bears no jinjuriki. Of course, Hidan could have easily encountered the other beasts and failed, ultimately causing Deidara to be assigned to him.(but if Gaara had countered him, news would have spread beforehand and security would've increased) But remember, Hidan is fairly new to the akatsuki and likely joined after the said jinjuriki were already caught

NOT TO MENTION UTAKATA HAS A BOUNTY ON HIM FOR 50,000,000 RYOU AND HE LACKS GREED *cough motivation for kakuzu cough*

Let's get rid of the obvious false encounters:
Gaara (would have mentioned by now)
Naruto (never met kakuzu until their arc)
Nii Yugito (first encounter)
Three tails (no jinjuriki)

Likely false: (captured early, possibly before hidan became a member)
Four tails
Five tails
Seven tails

remaining:
Killerbee (unlikely due to mastery)
Utakata (refuses to use jinjuriki)

Answer: Utakata

What's YOUR theory? Better yet, why do you think the battle went wrong? Maybe hidan's scythe was too dangerous for the sensative explosive bubbles? Feel free to comment your response! ^^

I might do an animation on this battle now>:3

Hidan only ever said he couldn't find his jinchūriki during the rescue Gaara arc, which means he likely was looking and couldn't find Yugito until the beginning of his arc. It was never said he fought and lost a jinchūriki. (Although I don't doubt for a second Utakata would whoop his ass ;)
